  18. 1) HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  19.         One (1) IBM compatible computer (286 or higher)
  20.         One (1) monitor, connected to the computer (VGA or higher)
  21.         One (1) Microsoft or compatible mouse, connected to the computer which
  22.                 should also be connected to the monitor
  23.    RECOMMENDED HARDWARE:
  24.         All that stuff above, plus a Sound Blaster or compatible sound card.
  25.    SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  26.         MS-DOS 3.3 (three point three) or higher, installed on the computer
  27.                 connected to the mouse and monitor.
  28.    
  29. 2) What is Captain Spleen 2?
  30.  
  31.         Captain Spleen 2 is the second episode in the saga of Captain Spleen,
  32. interplanetary space adventurer extraordinare (etc., etc).  In Captain Spleen
  33. 2, you must rescue Colin Gagnon and Robert Randall, the authors of the game,
  34. from the clutches of the evil MSDOS (not affiliated in any way with the above
  35. requirement).  On the way, you'll meet a cast of interesting characters, hear
  36. the infamous REPAIR sound effect, and see a certain name that starts with O
  37. several times.
  38.  
  39. 3) Alright, that's just dandy, but how do I play?
  40.  
  41.         Ah.  So glad you asked.
  42.         Here are the detailed instructions:
  43.         1) Start the program by changing to the directory you have installed
  44.            the game into, and typing SPLEEN2.
  45.         2) Grasp the mouse firmly in your right hand (for left handed users,
  46.            grasp the mouse firmly in your left hand).
  47.         3) Click, or if you just want to be silly, wait until the options
  48.            screen appears. Select New Game (of course, if you've saved a game,
  49.            you may wish to select Load Game).
  50.         4) Alright. Once you get into the game, read the text at the bottom of
  51.            the screen.  Be sure to pay attention to all of the text, as for the
  52.            most part (alright, on rare occasion) it pertains to the game.  When
  53.            you are done reading, click the mouse button.
  54.         5) Click on whatever looks relevant on the screen.  Also click on
  55.            whatever looks irrelevant. Clues might be hiding anywhere.  As a
  56.            general rule, click only when your mouse pointer is visible on
  57.            the screen.
  58.         6) Repeat steps 4 through 6.
  59.  
  60.         In addition to these options, you may also press CTRL-Q at any time
  61. to quit, though you may have to click at least once more before the program
  62. actually exits. Also, you may notice that you can load a game even if you have
  63. never played Captain Spleen 2 before. Yes, it is possible to load an unsaved
  64. game, but it will mess up your game very badly. We don't recommend it.

  66. 4) About the Sound Blaster card
  67.  
  68.         Some users may experience difficulties when trying to hear the
  69. digitized sound effects that take up a lot of space on their hard drives (this
  70. has never happened to me or to any of the systems I beta tested this on, but
  71. it's concievable, and I know of at least a couple of exceptionally messed up
  72. setups that would do it). If your computer locks up while playing sounds, try
  73. starting the game by typing:
  74.  
  75.         SPLEEN2 /NOSB
  76.  
  77. This will start Captain Spleen 2 without detecting a Sound Blaster card. Of
  78. course, now you won't be able to hear the sound effects, but come on. At least
  79. you still get to hear the GREAT PC speaker sound, right? Right?  Anyway, be
  80. aware, though, that any game saved with the sound on will load with the sound
  81. on. If you start Captain Spleen 2 normally, and the Sound Blaster is detected,
  82. and you save a game, when the game is loaded, it will be loaded as if the
  83. Sound Blaster has been detected, whether is has or not.
  84.  
  85. 5) Can I give copies of Captain Spleen ][ to my friends?
  86.  
  87. By all means, absolutely! Captain Spleen 2 is SHAREWARE, which means that
  88. you may pass it on to as many people as you like! Feel free to upload it
  89. onto your favorite BBS's. However, shareware doesn't mean public domain. If
  90. you like the game, and plan to keep playing it, you are required to register,
  91. or pay for it. Registering keeps shareware alive. If you don't register, the
  92. programmer (that's me!) can't make any more software (I know you're thinking
  93. it, don't say it). Shareware programmers make their livelyhood by 
  94. registrations, and recieve no other money from software houses or other
  95. organizations that distribute the files.

  106. happens once Captain Spleen ]I[ is written).

  111.    almost as much as a pair of russian underwear! And to think, you're not

  138. 1)  Clearly mark the package as "Shareware" or "Try before you buy" software.
  139.     You must explain the concept on the packaging.
